Wool pad care
- Prime the pad with compound or polish before you start, and keep the pad moving on cool surfaces.
- Clean the face as fibers load — use a buffing-pad spur between passes; do not run a packed pad.
- Flip double-sided pads when one face loads, then clean or swap.
- Wash between heavy sets. Wool pads are built with washable backings; let them dry fully before reuse.
- Stay in the RPM range on the product page (e.g. Buff and Shine lists 1750–2400 for cutting wool, 1200–1750 for polishing wool).
FAQ
White wool or yellow wool?
White wool is the heavy-cut step (Starke pairs Level R and Blaze with white wool). Yellow wool refines after heavy cut (Starke pairs Elevate with yellow wool).
Single-sided or double-sided?
Single-sided pads mount by hook & loop to a backing plate. Double-sided pads screw onto a 5/8"-11 double-sided adapter on a rotary and let you flip to a fresh face.
Can I use wool on a dual-action polisher?
Yes — choose DA-rated wool such as RUPES BigFoot DA wool or Lake Country DA Micro Wool. Standard rotary wool is built for rotary machines.
What size do I need?
Match the pad to your backing plate: 7.5"–8" pads for open hull sides, 5"–6" for general work, 3"–3.5" for tight areas and contours.
How do I clean wool pads?
Spur the face as it loads during use, and wash pads between heavy sets. Let them dry fully before the next job.
