Pro of the Month: Christian Valenzuela | Excel Yacht Service
Meet Christian and the 14-Person Team Behind Excel Yacht Service
When it comes to professional yacht detailing in Southern California, Excel Yacht Service is the real deal.
Based in San Diego, Excel Yacht Service has built an operation that goes far beyond the traditional wash-and-wax approach. Led by Director of Operations Christian Valenzuela, the company’s team of 14 regularly works on some massive yachts throughout Southern California, serving clients in San Diego, Newport Beach, Long Beach, and surrounding areas—and occasionally traveling as far as La Paz.
For Christian, the marine industry combines two things he values most: leading a great team and delivering work that makes a visible difference.
Before joining Excel Yacht Service, Christian spent 10 years with Costco as a Merchandising Manager, developing the leadership, organization, and customer service skills that he now brings to the marine industry.
Today, he manages the day-to-day operations of Excel Yacht Service, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and to the highest standards.
Full-Service Yacht Care
Ask Christian what types of projects he enjoys most, and the answer is clear: the ones where the team can transform the entire vessel.
Excel Yacht Service specializes in full-service contracts that can include:
-
Paint polishing
-
Stainless steel restoration
-
Window care
-
Teak cleaning
-
Sealing
-
Yacht detailing and maintenance
For Christian, there's something particularly rewarding about seeing an entire project through from beginning to end.
“Being able to complete the full process and present the owner with the final result is what makes these projects the most satisfying.”
That complete transformation is a major part of what motivates the Excel Yacht Service team.
Every vessel presents a different challenge, and the goal remains the same: bring the boat back to the condition it was meant to be in while helping protect it for the future.
More Than a Wash & Wax
One of the biggest differences between a professional detail and a basic wash and wax comes down to experience, technique, and product selection.
With more than a decade in the business, Christian understands that the materials used during a project directly impact the final result.
“We never compromise by using cheaper products,” he explains.
But according to Christian, professionalism doesn't stop at the products or the work itself.
Communication is just as important.
Keeping clients informed, respecting timelines, and delivering on promises are all part of the service Excel Yacht Service provides.
Quality gets the job done. Professionalism builds the relationship.
Taking a Proactive Approach to Boat Maintenance
For boat owners, waiting until there's a serious problem can become an expensive mistake.
According to Christian, one of the biggest mistakes owners make is simply waiting too long to maintain their vessel.
Salt, sun, and environmental exposure can take their toll, making regular maintenance an important part of protecting a boat's condition, appearance, and value.
Excel Yacht Service takes a proactive approach with its clients, keeping track of when a vessel was last washed, polished, or serviced and recommending maintenance when it's actually needed.
The goal isn't to sell unnecessary services.
It's to prevent larger problems before they happen.
Built Around Marine Detail Supply Co. Products
When asked what product or tool he couldn't work without, Christian points directly to Marine Nano Shop and STARKE products.
Excel Yacht Service has built its detailing process around these product lines, relying on their systems across its projects to provide consistent results.
For Christian, it's about more than simply having quality products on the shelf.
“Using the right products, combined with experience and proper techniques, allows us to deliver consistent results.”
That combination of professional experience + proper technique + quality products is what Excel Yacht Service believes separates professional yacht care from a basic cleaning service.
The Bigger Picture
Christian sees another common misconception about marine detailing: that the industry is simply about selling a service.
For Excel Yacht Service, the bigger goal is protection.
Proper maintenance helps preserve a vessel's condition, value, and appearance while reducing the possibility of costly repairs down the road.
That philosophy drives the team's approach:
Be proactive. Protect the vessel. Do the job right.
Advice From a Pro
For detailers looking to grow their own operation, Christian keeps his advice simple:
Be honest. Stay informed. Follow through.
In an industry where many companies can perform the physical work, Christian believes professionalism and communication are what separate great businesses.
Clients want updates.
They want reliable timelines.
And most importantly, they want someone they can trust.
“Show up when you say you will, communicate throughout the process, and treat detailing as a profession.”
For Excel Yacht Service, that's what builds long-term relationships.
